Member Announcement
I’m thrilled to announce that group members Teresa Stephens, Mike Ligett and Fran DeRespinis have had work accepted into the Click! Photography Festival outdoor exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art! From over 400 images submitted only 77 made it into the exhibit. As always, we are well represented, and proves yet again, that some of the best work in the Triangle is being made by photographers in our group. Congrats to all!
The exhibit opening is this Saturday, October 2, 2021, from 11:00 - 3:00. Their work in the exhibit will be featured near the Ellipse, located along the eastern edge of the Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park. The Park is easily accessible from the parking area at the Museum entrance off Blue Ridge Road.
I hope to see many of you all there!
Here are the images that were selected for the show:
Mid-Month Photo Critique
As always participants in our mid-month photo critique were treated to some of the best photography being created in the Triangle. We saw work from Fran DeRespinis, Eric Saunders, Lynn Fisher, and Teresa Stephens. Thanks to everyone who shared their work and for the feedback from all attendees.
Our Artist in Absentia this week was Eliot Dudik. We looked at work from his Road Ends in Water series. To learn more about his work check out his website: eliotdudik.com
The next critique group meeting will be October 20, 2021. Hope to see you there!
News & Notes
For any photographic artist or photo group that would like to engage their audience directly, the Click! Photography Festival Photo Fair is the perfect opportunity! The Fair will be held during the Click! Photography Festival in the covered market at Durham Central Park on Sunday, October 17 from 10:00am–2:00pm. The fair will bring together arts organizations, galleries, vendors, and individual photographers to build community and promote photography in the Triangle. The fair will be open to the public and promoted extensively through social media, websites, and advertising. Being under cover means that the Fair will be able to be held rain or shine!
Space is available on a first come, first served basis so don’t delay! To have your name or your group listed in media promotions your space must be reserved by September 15th. For more details go to the Click! website here, or use the QR code below:
Last month Jeff Bridges was our Artist in Absentia. Forum member Tom Karches suggested that perhaps, if we reached out to him, he might actually join us and agreed to try and contact him to extend an invitation. Incredibly enough, we did get a response but unfortunately, for health reasons, he was unable to join us. We did receive a link to a terrific interview he did with the New Orleans Photo Alliance last summer. In it, he talks about his work, how he finds inspiration, and a host of other interesting insights that are just what one might expect to come from “The Dude”. Check out the interview at: https://neworleansphotoalliance.org/august-2021-booklens/
Call for Work
Abstract work is often seen at Forum critiques and here is a call for work that should appeal to many of our abstract artists.
The Modern Visual Arts Gallery invites artists who have declared their independence from portraying natural reality in favor of creating abstract art that emphasizes the essential elements of line, shape, color, form and gestural mark to achieve intense and rhythmic effects. Empty your minds of preconceptions and strive for spontaneity in your art for this exhibition. The Gallery welcomes any style of abstract art -- from "drip" paintings to color field impressions to geometric abstract images.
For more information and submit work, go to the Cafe website here.
Don’t delay, the deadline is 9/13/21!
September Meeting Summary
As always, attendees at our September meeting saw some of the best work being made in the Triangle today! We saw work from photographic artists: Lynn Fisher, Mike Ligett, Jim Lee, Fran DeRespinis, and Dennis Szerszen. Thanks to all who submitted work to share this month!
Our Artist in Absentia this month was George Tice. George is often overlooked in most conversations on masters of photography which is too bad. Proving that you can find inspiration in your own backyard, his most well-known work was done in his hometown of Patterson, NJ. Sadly, most of his published work is now out of print, but the determined viewer will be rewarded with a search of the secondary market. Seldom Seen and Patterson II have a prominent place on my own bookshelf.
He does not have a website, but an internet search will yield a treasure trove of material. For a time, there was a documentary available on Amazon Prime, but it appears that it is no longer available. This is also a shame. He is represented by the Susan Spiritus Gallery in California. To see more of his work go to the gallery website here.
Happy World Photo Day!

Enjoy!
