The (Incomplete) History of Photography. A class for anyone that loves photography!

Instructor: Bryce Lankard

Join photographer Bryce Lankard as he leads us on a journey that begins with the early technological advances in photographic processes, to the birth of photojournalism, documentary photography, and art. You’ll see iconic photographs and photographers, record-breaking images, or scandalous, controversial, censored and banned images. You’ll examine the overlaps and influences between all of these categories, some of which you may not have known existed. We will also see thoughts and musings from many of these artists and their critics.

You’ll take a deep dive into the rich and evolving history of photography, embracing its many forms, styles, and technological innovations, while also acknowledging the incomplete and often overlooked narratives that have shaped the medium. You’ll discover key moments in photographic history—from the invention of the daguerreotype to the rise of digital photography—while also hearing the lesser-known stories within the photographic world.

The class will touch on major photographic movements, influential photographers, and pivotal technological advancements, while reflecting on the cultural, social, and historical impact of photography over time. Students will engage with the medium both as artists and as consumers of visual culture, discussing the role of photography in shaping memory, perception, and how we view the world.

Tuesdays, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25

6:00pm – 7:00pm

Tuition: $150

This is a zoom series of lectures. Zoom links will be sent to registrants prior to the start of class.
